Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsVarious Moshi Moshi: Pop International Style March Records This is a huge indie pop compilation. It's more than two hours long and the wonderful thing about it is that it's all good. It has a tendency to suck you in because of it's length: you start listening to it and there's no point when you think "ok, I'll stop listening to this and do something else now." Every song is one of those songs that makes you think "ok, I'll just listen to one more.." but you don't stop after that one song, no, of course not, you just keep listening until you realize you've been laying down on your bedroom floor for two straight hours with your headphones on and it's already deep into the night and you're bleary-eyed and past being tired. It's kind of devious if you ask me. The only complaint that I have about Moshi Moshi is that I already had a few of the songs on it, the ones from From Bubblegum to Sky, the I Live the Life of a Movie Star Secret Hideout, and B'ehl. Oh well. Those are good songs though, so if I didn't already have their previous homes, I would be estatic about them. Besides, there are a lot of wonderful songs on here that I hadn't heard before. I think my favorite at the moment is "No Faith" by Cinnamon, which is a great kind of croony (girl vocals) slow indie pop song, and I think it's the first indie pop song I've heard with a harmonica solo. Huh. Other great songs are the Japanese-pop-sounding "Go Now!" by Honey Skoolmates, "I've Been So Right" by Ray Wonder, which seems like what the Pixies would sound like if they played indie pop, I guess, "Les Triples" by Love Pandarins, which I would be singing all the time if only I could speak whatever language it's in, and "I've got the password to your shell account" by Barcelona, which is another great and geeky (that's a good thing!) Barcelona song. Now the harder question: how does it compare to the Pop American Style compilation which March put out a while back? Um, I dunno... they're both really good. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. If you like one you'll be just as happy with the other. I am, anyway. So there. Total score: 435 out of 437 |
