Big Orange Crayon

musical things

The Orange, The 27s, and Me and Jeremy at Valentine's!
12/12/99

This was a pretty wonderful show. It was the first time that I saw the Orange in a while, the 8th time I saw Me and Jeremy and would have been the first time I saw the 27s if they hadn't broken up before the show. I really wanted to see the Amazing Royal Crowns, but me and Ariel just couldn't stay around since she already was 40 minutes late getting home as it was. Oh well.

The Orange was the first band to play. They really remind me of the Poster Children. They play music that could be classified as pop/punk but it's really not like what that brings to mind. The songs are pretty fast and poppy, but more interesting than those radio pop/punk bands. They're more fun for one thing and they tend to branch out into other types of music you wouldn't really expect, like almost swing-like stuff that all of the sudden explodes with punk-ness. It's very cool.

The band that was going to be the 27s was on next. I forgot what their new name was. The singer/bass player and drummer were from the 27s and the guitar player was new. They were pretty much straight forward punk. I sorta liked them, but it didn't seem like they knew their songs very well. Or maybe it's just a punk thing. I did like the cover of Sir Mix-a-lot's "Baby Got Back", though.

Then came Me and Jeremy and like always they did a great show. There weren't as many people there as at the last show, but it was on a sunday night, after all. But all of the people who were there were really into it and there was a pretty high precentage of people jumping around. God I love high energy shows like these. They played a couple of new songs that I liked, especially one that I've forgotten the name of that really reminded me of Hum - it built up from a whisper to a scream and was very, very cool. I can't wait until they play again so I can hear it again. Their last song was "Josie's House" and they had everyone who knew the words come up on stage and sing along, so me and Ariel did. It was SO much fun. After the show we went over to talk to Mark and I gave him a hug. He's such a nice person. That's one of the best things about local bands: they are almost always really nice people. I bet if I tried to hug Ricky Martin (not that I'd want to) I'd get beaten up by people in riot gear.

When we got to the car, we realized that Ariel had to be home in five minutes, which sucked since it's a fairly long drive back home. But we still stopped at the A+ mart that I always seem to go to after shows. There were closer convenience stores, but I just like that one because of all of the strange things you seem to find out. Like this time while we were waiting behind a guy who was buying a bunch of malt liquor we found out that the guy at the register is trying to create a comic book. Neat!

So that was Me and Jeremy's last show around here until March, so I'll be waiting impatiently for the next one. They're going on a tour of the east coast and then on a tour in Ireland, which should be really cool. It would be really great to see them get an international following.
