6/03 show at Northern Lights (Blech)

I hate this club. I hate it I hate it I hate it I hate it. I hate the people, the atmosphere, the staff, everything. Me and Matt only stayed for one of the bands, which maybe wasn't the best thing to do, since I really wanted to see Ben Lee, but I couldn't stand to be in that place anymore.

The first act was local, I think they were called Rocky Velvet, but I'm not sure. I didn't like them. They were a kind of redneck throwback surfrock thing and had expensive instruments and they wore matching outfits and did an Elvis cover and sounded like they were trying to be kind of swing-like to be hip, but wanted to impress their redneck friends with showy guitar solos and songs about "drinking beer and having sex" (their words).

When they were done, Matt and I wandered around and then decided that we wanted to hop out between bands and get some fresh air and get away from the other people, who looked like they were going to a prom and had never listened to an indie band in their lives but went because one of our local corporate radio staions (EQX) was sponsoring it. And the place was awful as a club: it was all clean, the floors were shiny, everything was painted beige, there was a big bar in the middle, complete with two television sets and the bathrooms were even clean, and the people who worked there were assholes. That is not a club. That is a Pondarosa. A real club must be: 1)Filthy 2)Look kind of beat up 3)cozy 4)an enjoyable place to see a band. This was none of that.

And we were even denied our breath of fresh air. We were informed by the bouncer that we could not leave and come back later. ITS A FREE SHOW!!! We're not old enough to buy any alcohol from them even if we wanted to, if that's the reason that we weren't allowed to pop out. "Ok, fine, we'll stay until the next band" we thought, and waited near the door for them to set up. Then another group of people tried to leave like we did and he started screaming at them about the same thing he told us. That was it. We left, never to return. He yelled at us for some reason while we were leaving, but we just shrugged him off and half-heartedly yelled back. I really wanted to see Ben Lee, but I couldn't take that horrible, horrible place anymore. It really makes you realize how precious Valentine's is.
