June 20, 1999 - Project Kate and Mike Barron at Mother Earth's Cafe

This was a nice show. Me and Matt, after going through the normal proceedure of finding out that we're the only ones who can go or want to go set out to Albany to see Mike Barron and Project Kate. It was our first time seeing Project Kate and our second for Mike Barron, since we saw him open for Poster Children a while back.

Project Kate, who is one girl named Kate, was on first. She was a little late, so me and Matt got iced teas and waited and read magazines. Mother Earth's as it turns out, is a really nice place to do just that, so we didn't mind at all. She got there and started a bit later and played basically folk music, but with a nice poppy tinge to it, it wasn't that boring campfire stuff that I normally associate with folk music. She played an accoustic guitar and sang, but it was interesting girl-with-an-accoustic-guitar-singing-solo music. It seemed that me and Matt were the only two people who didn't actually know Kate, so that was kinda weird since I felt like I was listening in on someone else's conversation, but it was still fun. She was great and played and sang well and made little jokes like having to move Mike Barron's set list so she didn't try to play songs like "Slut" and "Fuck You".

Mike Barron came next. His car broke down on his way to the show and his guitar was out of tune, but he managed to do a really good show. I think he played the same songs that he did at the Posterkids show, but I liked them just as much this time as I did before. Its just him and his guitar on stage, but he plays punky-poppy-rock music, which seems kinda strange since I normally associate that with a full band, but you don't notice once he starts playing. I wanted to buy his CD, but I forgot to ask and I didn't realize that I'd forgotten until I was half-way back, so oh well. I plan on seeing him play again sometime, so I'll get it then I suppose.

After the show, me and Matt went to Zaks house and watched the second half of some John Grisham move on TV and then went home.
