Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsBeck Sexxlaws 12" DGC I am probably the only person who owns this record and doesn't own either Odelay or Mutations. It's weird, i kinda like Beck but I've never really been able to get excited over what he does. Probably a lot of that is just the indie prick in me that refuses to acknowledge the good in anything that gets radio play. So why did I get this? I dunno, it was 5 dollars, it was on clear blue vinyl and the grooves on it are so thick you could play it with a spoon. Besides I was curious about what his next album (the supposed "official" follow up to Odelay) was going to sound like. So I bought it. It's actually pretty good. Two mixes of the same song, but they're completely different so you don't really notice outside of the vocals. The regular mix (the a-side) is more of what the traditional radio Beck sounds like: 70s style horns and all that (plus a bit of banjo). The b-side, the "Malibu Mix" is more dance club sounding and is twice as long and I think a bit more interesting. I would actually recommend getting this despite the fact that it is on a major. Actually, if you wait long enough, I'm sure you can just get it by turning on your radio. But oh well, it's good for now. Total score: 135 out of 143 |
