Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsThe Bonaduces The Democracy of Sleep Endearing Records (note: I was reading through what I had up here and I realized that I like this CD a lot more than this review implies. But I'm leaving it this way out of laziness.) I'm kinda torn on this one. There are two major parts of the Bonaduces: the music and the lyrics. The music isn't really that striking: its that kinda mainstream style pop punk that everybody is getting sick of, but that's not what's really important about the Bonaduces. The thing about them is that the lyrics are so amazing, that they more than carry the music. They also make me wonder how many people this guy has watched die. Its all kinda depressing, but written so well that it's cathartic. Try these: "Suicide can be this subtle thing that keeps burrowing through your routine until you stop eating and phones just ring themselves to sleep" (from "Sara's Black Pyjamas") "And these cats won't keep quiet while I cut knots out of your hair. They're indifferent to your dying though they can smell it everywhere" (from "Eyes as Black as Blueberries") "The origins of hope wrapped in shoebox and rope, dragging us from our world of pretend"(from "I Nominate My Kitten for the King of the Dead") And so on. So that's my problem. The music is by all accounts mediocre, but the lyrics are so great that I get mad at the music for not keeping up. Not to say that the music is bad, but its just not special. Oh well. Total score: 382 out of 442 |
