Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsGirlfrendo Suprise! Suprise! Its Girlfrendo March Records Finally, a band has come along to bridge the gap between techno and Vaudeville. Well, not really, but almost. Girlfrendo's sound seems to be somewhere around broadway showtunes and late 50's/ late 60's pop with some modern elements mixed in. This is an interesting album to say the least. To say more, it's something that's fascinating to listen to, but might greatly irritate you and could be embarassing to play around other people. That said, I really like this album. Its not something that I could listen to all of the time, but it's something that I could listen to occiasionally when I don't have a headache. The main vocalists in the group are two girls with very, very British accents which can be very grating if you focus on them for a long time (this is odd since they are from Sweden). I would say their singing sometimes reminds me of the Spice Girls, but that would be mean and not really all that true. That part of it's more along the lines of a girl song from Grease or something, but in a better way than you would think if you were me. Then there are sometimes where it's really nice spoken word bits that for some reason seem French to me even though they're spoken in sailor-strength British accents. As far as the music goes, it mostly reminds me of oldies, but it is rough enough to be interesting and had parts that are electronic and others that are something else. It's very energetic, even on the slower bits and has a huge amount of variation to it. The first track ("Homework") is the most modern sounding song, and is very electronica-ish. A lot of the other songs have more of that show-tunes taste to them, but they won't make you sick with nostalgia. So, if you think that you could be annoyed by Girlfrendo, you shouldn't buy their album (duh). If you're willing to give them a try, you'll be rewarded with pleasant, mildly complex and interesting songs. Total score: 451 out of 493 |
