musical things

Automata
Blue Bunny Records

There are probably as many ways for music to be beautiful as there are people who make music. Nonetheless, I was still suprised when I found an album of bleepy-blooky Casiocore to be beautiful. I mean, the usual adjectives for that are "quirky" and "fun" and so on, "beautiful" rarely enters the picture. Anyway, Automata is a beautiful album that is equal parts Mathlete, Takkako Minnekawa and Pedro the Lion. Mathlete in that the songs are catchy and filled with beeps, Takkako Minnekawa in the bizarre samples and noises, and Pedro the Lion in the casual but heartfelt vocals.

"How You Dream", "Deaf Today" and "Sommerset Streets" are all those wonderfully beautiful types of songs that give you that butterflies-your-stomache-but-in-a-good-way feeling that comes when you hear a really touching songs. And oddly enough, the bloops add to it, rather than detract from it. I guess there's a first time for everything.
