John Galt
5 song EP
fifth market

I got ten minutes of high energy mayhem in the mail this weekend. John Galt is a band comprised of two twins (neither of which is named John or Galt) that are pretty much what you would think an american male Melt Banana would sound like. Which is to say that there is no way to tell what to expect other than it is going to be absolutely crazy and unpredictable. Their music is very chaotic in a literal sense: the structure is apparent in retrospect but each song as is entirely unpredictable. It fucking rules.

I'm glad to see that the "Japanoise" genre is making an impact on american bands. There really isn't any other type of music that can elicit such horror and revulsion in parents that grew up with rock and roll, so it's good to see that music can be threatening to the status quo again. And idealogical bits aside, this music is so unfamiliar that most people's immediate reaction is a curious attraction or complete confusion. The song structures are so bizarre compared to normal pop and rock standards that they force you to relearn how to listen to music. You don't really get a chance to see how awful and predictable main stream pop music is until you can experience something as mind blowingly different as Melt Banana, the Boredoms, or John Galt. And the great thing is that afterward you can happiy listen to stuff that makes other people cover their ears and run. It's fun!

The music itelf is so high energy that it makes more traditional hardcore music seem tame. The rumbling vocals associated with hardcore are replaced with unrecognizable screaming and the riffs and beats are so fast and scattered that you don't have anything to cling to and you just get sucked in and tossed around in the psychotic pace of the whole song. So yeah, this is not for the faint of heart, but if you're looking for the hardest, most energetic music you can get, then you should definitely look into this.

Total score: 824 out of 824
