Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsJumprope The Pensive E.P. Motorway I know that I said that I wasn't going to do a review of this because it's old, but I just had the urge to write about it for some reason or another. Jumprope will always have a special place in my head because they had the first release on Twee Kitten, and that deserves something, I think. This E.P. is a bit different from the No Happy Songs E.P. that they did for Twee Kitten in that the music is more brooding and sad to fit in with the songs. On NHS, some of the songs had lyrics that were bitter like that, but the music was bouncier and happier so that the two kinda clashed and ended with sad songs about failed relationships that make you smile, which is kinda weird. On this one, the lyrics are more biting and the music matches that mood for most of the songs, especially "That's the Way It Is" and "Promise Me", which both have some great cynical lines like "Its the way they give you candy / when it's pure insectide" and "Maybe you should promise me you'll cheat / and promise to tell me lies / that way I won't be disappointed when I look into your eyes." Absolutely bitter. I love it! Musically, Jumprope is kinda loungy pop. Its pretty nice on most of the songs, except for "Because of the Wonderful Things He Does", which rubs me the wrong way, being the only song sung by a boy on the record and for some reason bringing up images of a sweaty fourty-year-old guy in a leisure suit with big gold medallions and stuff. That's probably just me, but it's why I don't like that song. On the whole though, this is a great 7". You should buy it if you like pop music and also have a thing for jazz type stuff and recognize that it's fun to be a little bitter every once in a while. Total score: 224 out of 224 |
