Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsMarine Research Sounds From The Gulf Stream K Records Marine Research rules. Flat out, straight up, and so on. I think I've bought every one of their releases, so there were a few songs on this album that i already had, but I really like the new ones so there's not much to complain about. Especially since my Queen B 7" was getting a bit poppy from being overplayed and not cleaned... Marine Research is one of those bands that always gets referred to as coming from the ashes of other bands, in their case Heavenly, but I never got a chance to listen to Heavenly while they were together, so I'm not going to say anything like that other than what I just did. They play really good indie pop with all female vocals and musically they sort of remind me of a cross between Built to Spill and Kincaid. That means that they have great pop skills and that they can rock out without being annoyingly rocky. It's really great indie pop music that is beautiful, pretty distinguishable and you can jump up and down to it. My favorite songs are "hopefulness to hopelessness," because it's a bit of perfect pop music "Queen B," for pretty much the same reason and "at the lost and found," for the afforementioned reason and becuase I like the way it builds up. And, oddly and unimportantly enough, Marine Research is one of the few bands from whom I have more stuff on vinyl than CD... huh. Total score: 523 out of 523 |
