Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsNorth Sea Story Working For Wellness What comes into your mind when you hear the words "rock ballad"? Horror? Fear? Revultion? Me too, but although this CD evokes that particular combinatoin of words, it's not in the traditional sense. These are beautiful, emotional, complex songs that just happen to be long rock songs. I think that "Bicentennial Quarter" is a wonderful, somber bit of indie rock music, as is "Longshoreman's Vote" and quite a few of the songs on this disc. Anyone who digs on Dinosaur Jr. or Buffalo Tom should check these guys out. Even if your main thing isn't really the rockier side of the indie world (mine isn't) there are some wonderful songs on here that will make you happy. A thing to watch out for is that sometimes the singers voice adopts a bit of a Southern accent, which is odd considering they're from Brooklyn, but it doesn't get that irritating. In fact, it's part of why the first track, "Pigeon Falls", reminds me a bit of Honcho Overload and that's never a bad thing. The songs are a bit long, sometimes getting over 8 minutes, so be careful if you have a short attention span, but they don't get boring or anything like that so it's all good. So yeah, this is a great piece of indie rock and you'd be doing yourself a favor by picking it up if you have any sort of inclination towards this kind of music. So there.
