Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsPermissionslip Jealousy Rules Self-released I get all sorts of things in the mail. I'm not old enough to get bills, but I get offers for magazines I'll never read, advertisements for products aimed at increasing my business acumen, and occaisionally, a band will send me a CD. Never is it so terrifying as when I get one from Permissionslip. Not only are these albums obiously not the work of a sane person, they are from such a person that has my home address. I do have to admit that I enjoy it, though. Permissionslip is the work of one David Watlington, presumably doing all of this in his bedroom on a four track. Oddly enough, the songs are pretty catchy and have several layers of electronics in addition to the singing and guitar. I would describe it as Daydream Nation era Sonic Youth backed by a groovebox except the songs are absolutely bizarre, with topics as diverse as the stresses of working in a copy shop, dental care as related presidental assasination and monkeys. It is rather confusing, but somehow I find myself coming back to it. It tends to make you keep listening to it through a devious combination of genuinely catchy songs and morbid curiousity.
