Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsSissybar Songs for Peeps Mootron Records After listening to and becoming obsessed with Sissybar's "Smiley (We Become)" 7", I decided that I should probably buy their album, so I did. I wasn't disappointed, either. Both of the songs on the 7" are on here too, so they're probably isn't much of a point in buying both unless you're like me and you are fascinated by clear vinyl. And are fascinated by the fact that one of their members is a bald, breakdancing banjo player (don't worry, the music doesn't sound like either breakdancing music or banjo music). This is a super album. The songs are well written and played and all of that and there is a lot of variety to keep things interesting. I know one of the major criticisms of indie pop is the lack of variation in songs, but Sissybar doesn't fall into that trap. If you read my review of the 7" you know about their poppier side, but they have others, as well. "Cop & Friend" is a straight out rock song that could make you bang your head if you were so inclined. "Space Clown" is (appropriately enough) space rock-ish, and there are more pop songs to be found in the other ones. Every song is different from the last, which is a good thing, I think. It's tough to get bored listening to this. My only complaint is that the choir at the end of "Daisy Putter" annoys me to no end, but despite that, you should buy this album. I mean, what other pop band has a bald, breakdancing banjo player? And a picture of said bald, breakdancing banjo player wearing nothing but a cowboy hat and soap bubbles on the part of the case under the CD? Total score: 637 out of 637 |
