Various Artists (remixing songs by Shonen Knife)
Shonen Knife Ultra Mix
Universal Victor

I am a rabid Shonen Knife fan.Ê I can't get enough of anything that they have done, which is why I paid $30 to get this as an import.Ê Well, that and the fascination of an Alec Empire remix of a SK song.

So I got it, popped it in and skipped right to the Alec Empire mix ofÊ "Keep on Rockin'".Ê I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but this really wasn't it.Ê Its heavy industry man.Ê Shonen Knife is supposed to be happy Japanese pop, not angry German music.Ê And he made Naoko sound like Bjork.Ê Oh well.Ê At least he refrained from yelling "DESTROY!!!!" anywhere in the song, which is usually his remix custom.Ê On the whole it's kinda cool, but the songs don't really match up the original versions.Ê The Bis and Bison Brothers' mixes are pretty interesting, but I still prefer the originals.Ê The "Sweet Robots Mix" of "Wonder Wine" starts the album off, and it lets you know that this isn't the local corporate radio station "add a cheezy drum machine beat to a song and call it a remix" type of remix.Ê The guitars are gone and the voices are replaced by what sound sort of like SimpleText voices, only singing.Ê And neat Atari-like noises.Ê I actually like the Bis mix of "Wind Your Spring" but I still prefer the original.Ê The whole album is pretty much like that, but with some noticeable lows.Ê Buffalo Daughter, whose mix I had high hopes for because I love their own music, made an utter mess of "Buddha's Face" and turned a nice song into a cacophonous, wretched thing.Ê Oh well.Ê At least the mix of "E.S.P." is funky.
