Tiara
"It's a Message" 7"
Glazed Records

If you haven't already been introduced to any of Eric Rottmayer's projects (Tiara is one of them, Metronome, Eric Metronome and Yesteryear are others) you take a listen this instant. Well, if you're me you should anyway. I think he's just spiffy.

Anyway, Tiara is his rockier project and one of the ones where he plays with a band, so if you're more into that type of stuff, there you go. "It's a Message" sounds sort of like a Built to Spill cover of a Hum song, if that helps. The B side, "Circle of Friends", which also makes a softer appearance on the Eric Metronome Lime Green tape is also a wonderful song. It's a bit sweeter and more sentimental, and it's going on my next mix tape. Like you care.

So yeah, this is a great indie rock 7". Plus it's on neato white vinyl. There's a certain something to white vinyl... I mean, usually when you do a variation on the stardard black you pick an odd color, but white sort of says "I'm different, but I don't have to go on shouting about it." It has that weird punch of opening a sleeve for the first time and seeing a nonstandard color, but there's something beyond just that. And this is the part where I would relate that to how Eric Rottmayer's songs have this clever, subtle complexity to them that makes them more interesting when you examine them, but are also immediately enjoyable pop songs. Or something. They're pretty.

Total score: 713 out of 713
