My guess is that people in side projects hate it when people describe them by how much they do/don't sound like the main band. I mean the point of having a side project is to be able to try new things and work with different people under different conditions, or somthing, right? The problem is that it is so much easier to say that "they sound this much like their other band, but with more of this and less of that" and so on. Which is why I'll say that Vermont contains members of the Promise Ring, and they sound more folkey and calmer.

Now that aside, I don't think that they were really trying to distinguish themselves to much, I mean, the line "I'm not as good as the interstates are / I just can't take you that far" in "Tiny White Crosses" gives that impression, anyway. So if you're like me and you're jumping up and down in anticipation of Very Emergency this will hold you over a while.
