Big Orange Crayonmusical thingsThe Wee Turtles This Land is Your Land Pitch-a-tent records If you didn't already figure it out by the name, the Wee Turtles are a fun indie pop band. They showed up on the Kindercore Records Christmas Two comp, they play quick, catchy songs and make it very very clear on this CD that they're enjoying themselves. You have to love bands like this. I mean, even if you don't like the music (in which case you're some sort of devious monster), they're not hurting anybody and they come off as such nice, pleasant people to be around that I can't imagine anyone harboring any sort of animosity towards them. Of course, maybe "nobody harbors any animosity towards me" isn't such a huge accomplishment that they would write home and tell mom, I'm just saying that there's no reason to actively dislike them. Now I'll get into the reasons why you should actively like them. "Roofing Men" is a fun, witty song ("Whatever happens, roofing men like rock and roll") that I unintentionally started singing under my breath on the way to class, gaining some quizzical looks from my fellow students, but that's ok. It kinda reminds me of Kincaid, I suppose, and anything that even kinda sort of maybe reminds me of Kincaid makes me happy so they get my props. Along the same lines, "Rain Drag" reminds me of the Masters of the Hemisphere, so the same thing applies. There are also some quirky things going on here: "Enter... the Sasquatch!" confuses the heck out of me, but I still like it, and I also like the inclusion of strange cartoon samples in the first and last songs on the disc ("Theme Song" and "Playtime at Castle Greyskull", respectively). The experimental bits are good for a change of pace, but the real things that will make you obsessively in love with the Wee Turtles are the catchy pop songs and there are lots of wonderfully catchy songs here, so catchy song loving people rejoice!
