Wolfie
Wolfie, and the Coat and Hat
Kindercore Records

Welcome to the new Wolfie sound. Ok, it's not too different from the "old" Wolfie sound, but this CD was supposed to be a big metamorphosis from the kiddie new wave of Wolfie's first two albums. It's not like the old albums were bad, in fact they're some of my favorite albums ever, but the Wolfie kids felt that they weren't doing what they could be doing. Where Awful Mess Mystery had undistorted power chords and cute keyboard lines, Wolfie, and the Coat and Hat has distortion up the wazoo and organ. Another big difference is that these songs actually sound different if you turn the bass all the way down on your stereo, not to say that Wolfie is making booty shaking stuff now, but they will now make the floor shake if you want them to.

Overall, this is a more "professional" sounding CD than Wolfie's previous ones. Songs like "the All Good People" have more complex instrumental work while still maintaining the precious qualities that made us all love Wolfie in the first place: they're good natured, fun to listen to and nasally. So, if you're an old Wolfie fan, don't be scared just because they got a little aggressive, and if you were put off by how very twee they were before, maybe you should give them another listen.
