Diary07/07/00Today's big issue: i keep myself amused I went to see Shanghai Noon today - anyone who knows me knows that I have a weird obsession with Jackie Chan, so there ya go. My mom bought me a rice cooker! I'm going with my fambly to Ausable Chasm tomorrow, this should be.. interesting. Nick=nervous about job interview on tuesday. I still haven't written out my resume... Oh yeah, and this annoyed me - I needed to get a money order to send to BBPTC, so I stopped at an ATM to get cash. I did the normal stuff and for some reason it just sat there with my card in its belly for about five minutes and then said something like "this transaction cannot be done at this time." I had no clue what that meant - did I do something wrong? Was somebody stealing my stuff? So I went to another ATM and it worked fine. What was that other one's problem? It didn't even apologize. 7/06/00 Today's big issue: Jeremy's spoken... Not much to report regarding today, so I'll just ask a question. Is the new Sunny Day Real Estate as horrid as the mp3 of "Television" I listened to would indicate? It's like listening to freaking Genesis or Rush. And as Nick Mirov pointed out, they even bite off of Pearl Jam. I would really be sad and depressed about it, but I didn't think that How It Feels To Be Something On was really as great as everyone said it was anyway... 7/05/00 Today's big issue: in the afternoon, banana chips and tea Well last night I actually succeeded in seeing Titan AE, this time with Eric and his brother, Mike. It's was ok, I guess. The drawn and 3D animation didn't blend as well as I hoped, and the plot was kinda bad. But never mind that because... I might be getting a job! My interview is on the 11th. If all goes well, I'll be working part time at Castle Computer. Yay an all Apple place! I still have very little idea of what working there will be like - i don't know what I'd get paid, what my hours would be, anything. But I need both money and something to do, and fixing Macs is a pleasant enough way to do that. In twelve days I'll be going to the Secret Stars/Ida/Low/His Name Is Alive show in New York! Also, screwed up dream I had last night: I had this weird-ass coat that was kind of like a quilt and then I got thown in jail and everyone there had a big, bushy beard and was extremely polite except for the warden. One of the guys in the jail jumped out the window and left behind half of a big purple hat. The warden didn't like the hat for some reason and started shooting at it, and i put it on his chest and he shot himself. I woke up confused. 7/03/00 Today's big issue: berift of ideas, we live here but we're siiiiiiiightseeeers Eric, Al, Kevin, Matt and I pinned down exactly how not to see a movie. After a convoluted bit of planning, we decided to go to see Titan AE since the paper said it was playing at 11:55. Eric got out of work at 11, so Matt, Kevin and I hung around outside of the theatre where he works for him, then went and got Al at her place of employment and drove all the way out to Latham Circle to find out that it was playing at 11:55 in the morning, not at night. We dropped Matt off at his house and then decided that we had to do something. So we drove around trying to get scared by something. We settled for screaming in terror when there was a car behind us. Then we got lost. Nobody seemed to mind though, we just kept driving straight down long country roads we've never been on before until things became familiar again, and I made a wrong turn and got lost again. We continued this until about 2 in the morning. 7/02/00 Today's big issue: nick is fiscally irresponsible I did something today that I haven't done in a while: mailorder a big stack of music. I put my order in with Insound and I started the process of getting stuff from Blackbean. Sadly enough, I can't remember the stuff I ordered from Insound (well I know there were a few Bright Eyes things, a Maulies 7" because I trust Jeffrey, a Ted Leo project and, um, more) but here are the things that I should hopefully get in the mail from Blackbean soon enough: Metronome/Puff Puff Split 7" Metronome - Circle of Friends CD River-Venus The Boyish Charms - Confronted by a Variety of Spirits Pecan Sandies - Lil' Lion tape I still have to wait to hear back from Mike if they're all available (I'm worried about the Metronome ones...) but hopefully they will be mine. All mine. =) Luckily, BBPTC has great prices but my Insound order was insanely expensive (for my income anyway). 7/01/00 Today's big issue: sigh I just found out that the Rosenbergs played at Northern Lights tonight... I probably would have broken my "I fucking hate that club and I'm never going back" stance to see them if I had known. I guess as it is, I miss out on a show but get to be all righteous about it. I didn't do a thing all day and I'm upset about it. 6/29/00 Today's big issue: cronky Zak leaves for Shinkatique (I still don't know how to spell it) tomorrow morning, and he finished off his time here by having Gannon kill him on the very last part of Zelda. He's been trying to beat that game for two years, and he was almost there, but now he'll be gone for a month. Nyah Nyah. A ridiculously large group of us went to Price Chopper: Me, Zak, Eric, Al, Matt, Kevin, Ka Man, and Raessa. We bought a few bottles of soda and a tin of guava paste... We were jerks though: Sara was going to come over, but we were at the supermarket for quite a long time and she ended up driving by three separate times before giving up. Oy. I can't quite remember what the reason for not waiting for her was in the first place, or maybe we just all forgot or something... I went to Ariel's house today to fix her mom's Mac - I did so, but most of the time I spent playing Pod Racer against her brother, Alex. It was cute and I brought the ruckus, yo. I also got my first "hi, I'm at camp" letter from her today. All is well. I'm going to an Orange show tomorrow and hopefully a Mike Barron one on Saturday! Whee. Um. Reviews. Yeah. Soon. 6/28/00 Today's big issue: I'll never be a good fireman I finally got to see High Fidelity today! I still like the book better and they cut out some of my favorite parts (the daily "dance" with the bum, the woman selling off her husband's music collection) but I think the translation to Chicago was done pretty smoothly, although a lot about the american singer didn't make much sense because everyone else was american... I'm going over to Ariel's house tomorrow, oddly enough. She won't be there, but I'll be fixing her mom's Powerbook. Of couse, I left my OS 9 CD over at Zak's house, so I have extra errands to do before I can do that. Otherwise, I was lazy today. I still have to make Mel's tape, which means I still haven't sent her the present I got her in Boston (sowwy Mel!)... I'm going to turn off my lights now and look at the green, glowing, plastic stars in my room. 6/27/00 (again) Today's big issue: I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike! I saw Matt Gelina today for the first time in about a billion years! We (of course) chilled at Zak's with Zak and Matt B. We went to two different Price Choppers and got one of those balsa wood airplanes that has a rubber band propeller and a package of little plastic parachuter guys. The plane, as is required by the laws of toys, got stuck in a tree. Why do Schenectady police always follow me? Do I look particularly threatening? 6/27/00 Today's big issue: let me tell you about my weekend... Since I'm at home now and carless for the moment, it's the perfect time for me to do the diary entry that I've been neglecting. So, I went to Boston over the weekend. Since I was just there in March, most of the touristy stuff were things that I had just done recently, but it was still fun. My regrets are not getting a chance to go to Newbury street and not seeing the otters at the aquarium, but overall it was pretty nice. Ok, now that wasn't a very long entry, but if you want the long version, read the five page letter that I wrote to Ariel when I was bored in the hotel room. Actually, no you can't. I sent it already. =P pictures: - rar! 6/25/00 Today's big issue: zz Back from Boston. Sleepy. Story Time later. 6/23/00 Today's big issue: zoooooom! I leave to go to Boston in about an hour! My clothes are still in the dryer. They had better finish quickly. Today I helped film the high school graduation. Warren Snyder, the school board president, is the most boring, rambling speaker you could ever have the displeasure of listening to. Ah well. Anna played trumpet there - I didn't get a chance to say hi, but um, "hi!" I should write music reviews soon. I have too many things that I've been neglecting. Maybe in the car? I know I'll listen to stuff in the car, but it's usually a bit too bouncy to type. I might just write the "hey you're at camp" letter to Ariel that I've been meaning to write... that uses less electricity, too. Unless something weird happens, I won't be updating this until I get back on sunday or so... 6/22/00 Today's big issue: whooooop!! I'm actually going to be gainfully employed! Well, just for a day. I'm going to help film the highschool graduation, which means getting up at 6:30, but I'll be getting money which I desperately need because... I'm going to Boston tomorrow! It's with my dad, his wife, and my brother. Family trips aren't as cool as trips with friends, but still. I'm excited. Zak and I bought new guitar strings today. I hadn't changed my strings in a long long long time, and I kind of liked the really dull, filthy tone from it, but it was time to move on. You have to love the packaging on guitar strings, too. REO Speedwagon uses my strings! We also bought the weirdest soda that I now love: Goya coconut soda. It's bizarre. It really tastes like coconut, which is a strange taste for a soda. I swear, Goya makes everything imaginable. They probably make pinapple flavored caulk. 6/21/00 Today's big issue: ... Saying goodbye sucks and I've never been good at it. Ariel left for camp today. I didn't have any lint in my pocket so i gave her a foam stegosaurus instead. When i drove by her house where she doesn't live anymore on the way home from Zak's long after she left, there was fog all over the road. Everything kind of felt off today. Zak, Eric and I went to get a movie and it took us almost 2 hours and we settled on Harry and the Hendersons. The idea of watching that movie is a lot more pleasant than actually doing so. I left in the middle and brought everyone home. I'll be better soon. 6/19/00 Today's big issue: yay! Whoo! A beautiful day! Zak, Kevin, Raessa, Ariel and I all went to Collins Park and chilled for a while, and at night, Zak, Matt and I watched a documentary on dinosaurs. Quite a perfect day. I'm going to add a separate pictures section to my page tomorrow sometime. Speaking of which, here are some from the park: - Ariel and I ride a seesaw. If she ever makes a teeniebopper album, this will be the cover. 6/18/00 Today's big issue: sunrise, sunset... I met Anna today for a few seconds! I arrived at Brueger's with my dad just as she was leaving with her mom, and she said hi - I'm recognizable, apparently =) Zak, Eric and I made cookies today, but not ordinary cookies in any respect. We used a sugar cookie recipie and to make them nick-edible, we substitued butter with soy margarine, cream with rice milk, and an egg with a blob of peanut butter. The main reason for making them is because I discovered dinosaur cookie cutters in one of the cabinets in my house. So, we made dinosaur cookies and then random things with the dough that was left over. I'll refrain from mentioning what Eric made. Everyone else thought that they were gross, but I kind of liked them. Of course, they died on the way home because the box of rice milk leaked all over. 6/17/00 Today's big issue: another day or a nondescript ending Today was exclusively for chilling. Ariel, Zak, Kevin, Matt and Katie were all at Zak's at various times and there were two separate trips to the supermarket. Yeah, we're that bored, but it's fun. I had my first mango in my life. I mean, I had mango flavored or influenced stuff before, but not the actual fruit. It was quite a trip. Are they supposed to taste like pine near the outside? Today was quite possibly the last time I'll be able to chill with Ariel for quite a while. She leaves for camp on wednesday. Tomorrow is father's day, so she won't be able to do anything then, she has a final on monday (I think) and then two on wednesday, so there won't be much free time, and she has a boyfriend and other friends who I'm sure she'll want to spend a lot what free time she has seeing. I still need to give her her going away for summer mix tape, so it's not like I won't see her, but still. I finally got Fevers and Mirrors by Bright Eyes today. Why did I wait so long? I got their Insound tour support CD, too. It's after 3 in the morning. I usually don't stay up this late, but I have nothing better to do. Sleep doesn't seem very attractive at the moment. I think I'm going to make myself some tea. Decaf, though. 6/16/00 Today's big issue: I'm the cat who will cop out when there's danger all about I saw the new Shaft today! I don't think there's any way that I could not like it, because it does have Sammy L. in it. Still, nobody makes a better Shaft than Richard Roundtree. My mom is getting on my nerves. Why is it that people with earlier sleep schedules feel that it's ok for them to wake everyone else up by being noisy when they get up in the morning, but if my tip-toe-ing down the stairs at night isn't quiet enough, it's a crime against nature? At least I'm going to be able to stay in town tomorrow. I feel like a bit of a jerk for missing my cousin's gradution, but best friends are important, too. 6/15/00 (again) Today's big issue: waalaalaa We watched Next Friday today. Ice Cube is my hero. Here's a bizarre thing that I forgot to mention in the entry about yesterday: When Zak and I were in the thrift shop, they were playing the local "lite" music station, and they did one of their little self advertisments. It said, "B95.5: We won't embarass you in front of your children with foul language." The hell? Anywy, here's my current conundrum: My cousin's high school graduation is this weekend, and my mom and my brother are going out to Connecticut to be there. I'm pretty much expected to go, but there is a small possibility of me staying here. The reason that I want to stay is that it will be Ariel's last weekend before she's gone at camp for a few months. So I basically have to choose between my family and one of my best friends. If I go, I'll be totally depressed the whole time, but if I stay, my mom will hold it against me until far after I'm dead, and most likely she'll make me go to my dad's house for the weekend anyway, effectively cutting my off from all of my friends anyway. Plus, there's no guarantee that Ariel will actually be able to do anything over the weekend anyway. But still, I really want to be here. 6/15/00 Today's big issue: I hope it's dark blue with blue stars Wow, I haven't touched this in quite a while... The last couple of days were fun, but also a lot like the days before them, so I didn't see much of a point in writing them down. Yesterday, Zak and I went to a thrift shop and I bought a big stack of records for five dollars. I got: - A collection of Buddy Holly songs - Highlights from H.M.S. Pinafore and the Sorcerer - A warped M.C. Hammer 12" - Some call it Oom Pah! German Beer Drinking Songs for Singing and Dancing - Great hits of the fantastic 50s Volume 1 - Moog: Original Compositions and Improvisations by Dick Hyman - Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon - A 7" sampler for the Sesame Street movie soundtrack - An Alice Cooper 45 - A Puff the Magic Dragon 45 And... - A Yars' Revenge Atari Cartridge! After that, and a bit of annoying Kevin at work, we watched Shaft. I had never seen it, and this was a great travesty in the eyes of my peers. Now I'm cured, though. We went to see Gladiator later on, but that wasn't as good as Shaft. The day before, we went to Eric's and watched Super Mario Bros. the Movie. I think we're the first people to watch that movie in six years. I kinda liked it though, considering. And now it makes sense why they're called the Mario brothers, even though it's stupid: their names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. Huh. To rank the movies I've seen over the past few days, Shaft is better than Super Mario Bros. which is better than Gladiator. Not to dis too much on Gladiator, but how could it compare with those masterpieces of film? I really do plan to write more music reviews, it's just that my turntable was out of commission until very recently, and now my headphones broke. My new ones that cost me thirty dollars just decided that I didn't need to hear out of the left speaker. Grr. So, since I can't listen to music at night, it's difficult. I'll try, though. 6/10/00 Today's big issue: rock. Yay a fun Saturday! Zak, Matt, and Zak's family went to Thatcher Park, which is a really cool place with a big cliff and a few waterfalls. We hiked around for a little while, had bread, and then went back. Later on, Zak, Matt, Kevin, Thea, Katie and I all went to see Frequency at Scotia Cinema. Bad bad bad movie, but we all had fun, I think. I just wish that Ariel could have come along - she really wanted to, but she had parental obligations that kept her home. She thinks that Zak thinks she's avoiding him, but she's really not and it really sucks since she has precious little time before going back to camp... things will get better though, I think. Also, let it be known that Megan Stack is officially the nicest person in the universe. She offered to let my stay at her appartment for the night of the Secret Stars and Ida show in New York City. I officially cannot wait. Pictures from today: Thatcher park: The older entries are here... |
